I came to Liberty (I will refrain from sharing the year) bright-eyed and ready to soak it all in. I immediately got involved with ministry teams, social events and as much activity as I could. Maybe it was my way of enjoying college life - or maybe it was my attempt to avoid the looming reality that I was terrified to face...
What did I want to be when I grew up?!

It was a question that had haunted me for years. I was a good student and enjoyed school. I had been active in extracurricular activities and had expressed many interests - but none of the above had helped solidify what to anticipate for the world ahead and what I would do with my life.

Suffice to say, I went through four majors before I realized each one wasn't right for me.
Every semester it would happen. It would be time to meet with my advisor and schedule classes. I would pour over status sheets and try to find more classes in the left-hand column that I could take, but after three full-time semesters, my options were dwindling. Soon, I was faced with the reality of choosing from the right-hand column...but from which major?!

I couldn't take it anymore. I had the opportunity to be part of the very first Exodus team (a hint as to when I was in college) and take a semester off from school to travel the country. I jumped at the chance - not just because I wanted to be involved in ministry, but also because it would prolong the inevitable reality of having to choose my major.

I prayed for wisdom and direction and I specifically asked God to show me during this 7-month hiatus what I was supposed to major in. Within the first month, I knew. God had confirmed to me and I was thrilled to know that I would be returning to Liberty the following semester to pursue my major - FINALLY!

I will pause to say that back in my day, (yes, kids, it was long enough ago) there wasn't an active Career Center on campus and there wasn't anything like a career assessment being offered for confused students like me.

We've come a long way. And so have I. It's funny to me - but all part of God's design - that I now head the office responsible for helping guide students toward a major and career goals. Considering I stressed so much about my own major and career path, I can legitimately say "I feel your pain."

And maybe you're not like me at all. Maybe you have a clear idea about where you're headed, what you're doing. I applaud you! I also encourage you to take advantage of our other services as you prepare for the daunting job search.

God has lead me through different jobs since I graduated with my Bachelors and then my Masters and I can look back over my work history and see how each position has equipped me for the next, and each skill attained has helped launch me further into my career path.

I can tell you from first-hand experience, whatever your situation, the staff of the Career Center are here for you. We are here to serve, help, guide and provide you with resources to make sure - especially in this recessive economy - you not only get an education from Liberty but you get the necessary tools and skills to help you in your career.

Once upon a time I was a lost and confused freshman. Now I am here to help you get focus for your future. Stop by, schedule an appointment, or email us. We're here to help.

In His Service,

Carrie Barnhouse
Career Center Director
